Chemical Properties of Toluene
Formerly called toluol, toluene is a colourless solution with a smell like paint thinners. From a chemical point of view, it’s a benzene derivative with a single substitution of a single methyl group (-CH3) attached to a benzene ring. As such, its IUPAC name is methylbenzene and it’s classed as an aromatic hydrocarbon.Key properties include:
- Chemical name: Methylbenzene
- Synonyms: Toluol, Phenylmethane
- Chemical formula: C₆H₅CH₃
- CAS number: 108-88-3
- Appearance: Clear, colourless liquid
- Odour: Sweet, sharp, and aromatic
- Boiling point: ~110.6°C
- Melting point: ~-95°C
- Flash point: ~4°C (closed cup)
- Density: ~0.87 g/cm³ (at 20°C)
Uses and Applications of Toluene
Because of its unique solvency and chemical stability, toluene is one of the most versatile organic solvents available. It plays a vital role in manufacturing, laboratory processes, and industrial maintenance industries:- Paints and Coatings – Used as part of a chemical solution as a solvent to dissolve pigments, binders, and additives
- Adhesives and Rubber Processing – Acts as a key solvent in sealants, adhesives, and elastomers
- Chemical Feedstock – Precursor for benzene, xylene, trinitrotoluene (TNT), and benzoic acid
- Fuel Additive – Used alongside other automotive chemicals to improve octane rating in gasoline formulations
- Cleaning and Degreasing Agent – Used to remove greases, oils, and wax residues
- Printing Industry – Solvent for inks and resins
- Laboratory Solvent – Commonly used as a non-polar solvent for organic reactions
Safety and Handling Guidelines
If inhaled, toluene can cause tiredness and weakness, and other symptoms similar to consuming excess alcohol, including confusion, memory loss and nausea. These symptoms disappear when exposure stops. Toluene is much less toxic than benzene and has largely replaced it whenever possible. Currently, there is no evidence to suggest toluene is carcinogenic. We recommend proper handling and storage procedures be carried out, however, including:
- Work in well-ventilated areas or under a fume hood
- Wear appropriate PPE – Nitrile gloves, safety goggles, and protective clothing
- Avoid open flames as vapours are flammable
- Store away from oxidising agents and heat sources
