We also supply isopropyl alcohol for general and analytical use.
Isopropyl Alcohol Uses in the Lab
This compound is very versatile and used in a wide range of laboratory applications:
- As a cleaning fluid to wipe and clean work surfaces. Isopropyl alcohol is relatively non-toxic, evaporates quickly and leaves virtually no oil traces.
- As a solvent for many non-polar compounds, making it a preferred choice for dissolving oils.
- As an intermediate in a multitude of reactions, including esterification to generate isopropyl acetate; with sodium hydroxide and carbon disulphide to generate sodium isopropylxanthate and with titanium tetrachloride and aluminium to generate aluminium and titanium isopropoxides.
- As a disinfectant agent, typically as a 60-70% solution in water. Water causes the bacteria to open up their pores, allowing isopropyl alcohol to enter the cell and disrupt metabolism. It can also be used as a hand sanitizer.
- As a popular preservative among biologists, who prefer this compound for its lower toxicity compared to formaldehyde and other types. Commonly, a 70-99% solution is used to preserve organic tissues.
- For DNA extraction analysis. Isopropyl alcohol is added to a solution containing DNA with the purpose to precipitate it into a pellet after centrifugation. This works because DNA is insoluble in isopropyl alcohol.

Isopropyl Alcohol Uses
Isopropyl alcohol is a multi-purpose alcohol product with a wide range of uses in cleaning, cosmetics and hospitals. It can even also be used at home as a rubbing alcohol for cleaning surfaces and preventing stains.
The various uses of isopropyl alcohol include:
- As a solvent for coatings and industrial processes
- As an intermediate ingredient creating isopropyl acetate
- As an ingredient in medical and self-care products such as hand sanitiser and disinfecting wipes
- As an ingredient in ‘gas dryer’ fuel additives in the automotive industry
- In the home as a cleaning agent, stain remover, defroster and as a safer insect repellent.
Properties of Isopropyl Alcohol
Isopropyl alcohol is a compound with the formula C3H8O. Its structural formula can be written as CH3CHOCH3, to make it easier to understand. This alcohol forms a colourless flammable solution with a strong characteristic odour.
Isopropyl alcohol has a molecular/molar mass of 60.1, and a density of 0.786 20kg/m3.
‘Can You Drink Isopropyl Alcohol?’ – Risks & Hazards
Isopropyl alcohol (or rubbing alcohol) is an entirely different chemical to drinking alcohol and therefore should not be consumed. Problems caused by drinking isopropyl include headaches and dizziness, nausea and vomiting and in some cases, death. Overdoses can be identified by the acetone-like fruity odour on the breath.
Another concern about this compound is its flammability. In practical terms, isopropyl alcohol is denser than air and is flammable between 2 and 13% in air. It can also form peroxides, which may explode in high concentrations.
For these reasons isopropyl alcohol should be stored in a well ventilated space, away from any open flames or heat sources. Safe handling procedures must be followed at all times when handling this compound, with protective clothing being worn at all times.

Buy Different Grades of Isopropyl Alcohol Online
ReAgent is a leading UK chemical supplier with almost 50 years of industry experience. Our isopropyl alcohol (IPA) comes with a 100% quality guarantee and is available to buy in four different grades:
- Analytical
- Laboratory
- General
- 15% v/v
Also known as isopropanol or propan-2-ol, isopropyl alcohol has a range of applications and can be used in many different industries depending on its grade. Each grade is suited to a specific use and purpose, and we have outlined these below.
Analytical IPA Uses
Isopropyl alcohol for analytical use is often the best choice when specification is strictly required. This grade of isopropyl alcohol is rigorously tested and certified to Analytical Reagent standards (AR). It is sold in two pack sizes: 2.5 litres and 25 litres. We also have options for bulk orders available on all products, as well as customisable packaging options.
Laboratory IPA Uses
Isopropyl alcohol for laboratory use is tested and certified to our laboratory standards (LRG), which are not as stringent as AR standards. Our accreditation to the ISO 9001 Quality Standard also guarantees that our products are the highest grade possible.
General Use IPA
Isopropyl alcohol for general use is a good quality fit for general purpose applications where proof of testing and certification is not required. It is available in two pack sizes: 25 litres and 200 litres. Price breaks are available for multiple pack purchases of all our isopropyl alcohol grades.
