Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) has a variety of names. Its chemical name is propan-2-ol which shows that it is one of two isomers of propanol (a.k.a. propyl alcohol), the other being propan-1-ol. It is also known as isopropanol. Either term can be used more-or-less interchangeably.

Additionally, it is also a key ingredient in many cosmetic, pharmaceutical and medical products due to its low toxicity.

  • Solvent: it is able to dissolve several non-polar compounds, making it popular as a cleaning fluid in electronics and around the house
