Common Uses of Propan-2-Ol
The vast majority of the propan-2-ol produced is used in industrial applications, but this compound also has some small-scale household uses, particularly in personal hygiene products. Additionally, it is also a key ingredient in many cosmetic, pharmaceutical and medical products due to its low toxicity.
Some common uses for isopropanol include:
- Solvent: It is able to dissolve several non-polar compounds, making it popular as a cleaning fluid in electronics and around the house
- Medical solution: A 60-70% solution of isopropanol is commonly used as a disinfectant or hand sanitiser
- Fuel additive: Isopropyl alcohol is also used to “dry” water present in fuel as part of chemical mixing processes, preventing damage from freezing in cold temperatures
- Preservative: A 70-90% solution is used in laboratories as a preserving solution, a safer alternative to formaldehyde
- Intermediate: Isopropanol is used as an intermediate in many different types of reactions, including esterification to isopropyl acetate and the production of sodium isopropylxanthate. It can also react with aluminium and titanium tetrachloride to generate aluminium and titanium isopropoxides, as well as being used as a dihydrogen donor in transfer hydrogenations
Safe Handling and Storage
Propan-2-ol is highly flammable and should always be handled with care. When working with this chemical, ensure you follow all COSHH regulations and safety guidance outlined in the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
- Store in a cool, well-ventilated area, away from heat and ignition sources
- Use only with appropriate PPE such as gloves, goggles, and protective clothing
- Avoid inhaling vapours
- Prevent contact with skin and eyes
- Containers should be tightly sealed when not being used
For full safety guidance, consult the MSDS before handling or storing Propan-2-ol.
