About Deionised Water
Deionised water is water that has had almost all of its mineral ions removed, including calcium, sodium, iron, copper and chloride. It is often confused with demineralised water, which is water that has had all of its minerals and contaminants removed.
Although deionised water has had most of its ions removed, it still cannot be classed as entirely pure. Our demineralised and ultrapure waters are recommended alternatives for when higher grade water is required.
Uses of Deionised Water
Often abbreviated as DI, deionised water is used for a range of applications. It is regularly used in laboratory and pharmaceutical environments to prepare chemicals and mixtures. Deionised water is also used to test certain substances for specific compounds.
DI water is also used
- In acid and alkaline batteries
- In flushing and topping up car cooling systems
- In household detergents
- In perfumes and other cosmetics
Production & Testing of Deionised Water
We make deionized water using a several step filter process. We first use an organic trap, where a special resin removes most of the organic matter. The water then passes through a twin-bed deionizer, where one anionic tank removes the cat ions whilst the other cationic tank removes the anions.
By now, the maximum level of impurities in the water is 10 µS/cm which already much lower than traditional distilled water. At this point, the water is can be called deionised.
To further reduce impurities, the water is passed through a mixed bed resin, where impurities are reduced to > 0.05 µS/cm. The deionised water is given ultraviolet treatment, passing through a strong UV light to kill any remaining micro-organisms.
You can go a step further and pass this water through a 0.2 micron filter. This makes the water ultrapure – and Ultrapure Water can be purchased from ReAgent here.
