Also known as methylene chloride, dichloromethane is a colourless and volatile solution with a characteristic sweet aroma. Dichloromethane is commonly used as a solvent because, while it may not be miscible with water, it can be mixed with a variety of organic solvents.

Dichloromethane is a toxic chemical. If ingested, or chronically inhaled, it is quickly metabolised into carbon monoxide. This can result in carbon monoxide poisoning and liver failure. Skin contact may also result in chemical burns as dichloromethane can dissolve fatty acids present in the skin. It has also been labelled a potential carcinogen, though there is limited evidence.
In many countries, products containing dichloromethane must carry a warning sign, indicating its dangers and that it can only be used by professionals. In Europe, for example, sale to DIYers was banned in December 2010 and now it can only be used by some professionals under specific conditions, ensuring appropriate ventilation conditions.
