Uses of Propanediol
Propanediol is a popular compound and is used in many industrial processes, from the manufacture of plastics to antifreeze products:
Resins and plastics: Almost half of all propanediol produced is used in the production of polyester resins. In this process, propanediol is mixed with isophthalic acid and maleic anhydride. The resultant polymer goes through a few more crosslinking reactions to generate thermoset plastics
Food industry: This compound is added to many foods as a solvent, preservative or humectant. Examples include ice-cream and other dairy products, coffee and soda
E-cigarettes: Recently propanediol found a new use in e-cigarettes. This compound is used due to its low toxicity and corrosivity
Pharmaceutical uses: This compound has many medical applications, including as a solvent in oral or topical formulations which require ingredients insoluble in water
Personal care and cosmetics: Propanediol is a common ingredient in many different types of personal care products
De-icer: Taking advantage of propanediol’s ability to lower freezing point when mixed with water, this compound is used in many de-icing and antifreeze products. This compound can replace ethylene glycol due to its low toxicity and low environmental impact. Typical solutions range from 40:60 to 60:40 mixed with water
Veterinary medicine: Propanediol is also used in many drugs used in veterinary medicine, including to treat hyperketonaemia in ruminants. In these animals, propanediol is metabolised in the rumen and converted to propionate, which can be used as an energy source

Propanediol can refer to any of its 3 isomeric compounds. The 3 isomers of propanediol are:
1,2-Propanediol commonly known as propylene glycol
2,2-Propanediol commonly known as geminal diol
1,3-Propanediol commonly known as trimethylene glycol
ReAgent stocks 1,2-propanediol. Widely referred to as propylene glycol, it is a synthetic organic compound and a liquid alcohol that finds use in a large variety of industries. Its other names include methyl ethyl glycol (MEG), methylethylene glycol and 1,2-dihydroxypropane.
Chemically, it is classified as a diol because of its 2 hydroxyl groups (-OH). Physically, it appears as a colourless, odourless and viscous liquid with a faintly sweet taste. It is miscible with most solvents, absorbs water easily and is generally considered non-toxic despite its close relation to ethylene glycol.
The chemical properties of propylene glycol are:
IUPAC Name: Propane-1,2-Diol
Chemical Formula: C3H8O2
Boiling Point: 188.2°C
Melting Point: -59°C
E Number: E1520
CAS Number: 57-77-6
In addition to these properties, this compound has low volatility and is non-corrosive. Its non-toxic nature is further shown by the fact that it has its own E Number.
Uses of Propylene Glycol
Propane-1,2-diol is most famous for its use in antifreeze, where it replaces ethylene glycol to create a non-toxic and safer solution. This is especially important given the number of fatal accidents that happen when pets, for example, lap up spilt ethylene glycol-based antifreeze from the ground.
As well as its non-toxic nature, its miscibility with solvents makes this compound well-suited to a huge range of applications across many different industries. It is used in:
Food preservatives and humectants
Artificial smoke machines
Veterinary oral treatments
As when handling any chemical material, care should be taken when handling propanediol. Always read the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) before working with this compound.
Although it is non-toxic, you should always keep propylene glycol out of the reach of children and animals. Wear appropriate protective clothing when handling this compound including protective overalls, compatible safety gloves, approved eye protection and safety footwear.
All staff at ReAgent are fully trained in the safe handling of hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals. ReAgent complies with all current safety regulations and is proud of its excellent safety record.
