- Used in the process to prepare extracts of hops and other flavourings
- Aerosol spray propellant

Natural Occurrences
Dichloromethane can be found in nature, from volcanoes and wetlands, to algae and the ocean. Despite this ubiquitous presence, the vast majority of all dichloromethane is the result of industrial synthesis. Methods of Synthesis
Dichloromethane can be synthesised by the reaction between chlorine gas and methane or chloromethane at high temperatures. At 500 degree Celsius, methane can be increasingly chlorinated in a series of reactions to produce chloromethane (CH3Cl), Dichloromethane (CH2Cl2) chloroform (CHCl3) and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). Once this process is completed, individual compounds can be separated by distillation.CH4 Cl2 → CH3Cl HClCH3Cl Cl2 → CH2Cl2 HClCH2Cl2 Cl2 → CHCl3 HClCHCl3 Cl2 → CCl4 HClFree Technical Advice
