Applications of Methylene Chloride

This chemical is widely used as a solvent in many industrial processes. Methylene chloride is also an effective paint stripper and degreaser, and used to be the preferred chemical for decaffeinating tea and coffee. The food industry also utilises methylene chloride to prepare extracts of various flavourings.

Another common application of methylene chloride is as an aerosol spray propellant. It is present in most spray paint or aerosol cans, and is also used as a blowing agent for polyurethane foams. Methylene chloride can be toxic if inhaled chronically. If used in this way, it is important to ensure the area is well ventilated and that you always wear a protective mask.
