About Ethanediol

Also known as ethylene glycol or ethane-1,2-diol, ethanediol is an organic compound with the formula C2H6O2. It is a vital ingredient in the manufacture of polyester fibres in the textile industry and polyethylene terephlate resins in the plastic industry. It’s also commonly used in antifreeze formulations, as a coolant or as a desiccant in the lab.

Some chemical and physical properties include:

  • Molecular formula: C2H6O2
  • Molar mass: 62.07 g/mol
  • Alternative Names: 1,2-ethanediol, ethane-1,2 ethylene glycol, mono-ethylene glycol
  • Appearance: Odourless and colourless viscous solution with a sweet taste
  • Melting point: -12.9 degree Celsius (8.8 Fahrenheit)
  • Boiling point: 197.3 degree Celsius (387.1 Fahrenheit)
  • Solubility: Miscible in water and most organic solvents, but only slightly soluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons
  • Corrosive with some plastics

Production

This compound can be synthesised from ethylene oxide, which is converted to ethanediol in the presence of water. This reaction can be conducted at high temperatures or in the presence of a catalyst.

Yields above 90% can be achieved in the presence of an acidic catalyst in excess water, minimising the production of by-products like diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol and tetraethylene glycol. An alternative method involves conversion of ethylene oxide to ethylene carbonate in the presence of carbon dioxide, which subsequently reacts with water to generate mono-ethylene glycol.
