Industrial Uses of Acetone
With its characteristic sweet smell, the most well-known household use for acetone is as nail varnish remover.
The same chemical properties made acetone a popular solvent for many other compounds, including as a paint thinner or to dissolve wax, resin, plastic, glue and industrial varnishes. It is estimated that more than 30% of all acetone produced worldwide it’s used as a solvent for other chemicals.
Acetone has been suggested as a fuel additive where, at least in theory, its dissolving power would be useful to clean the engine. Some defend it makes the engine run smoother with cleaner gas emissions, but further studies are needed to prove these claims.
It is also directly involved in the manufacturing process of certain products, such as rayon, fibres, plastics, some pharmaceutical drugs and photographic film.
It can also be used in make-up and perfume, to give the final products a specific scent; or as the main ingredient in chemical peeling procedures to clean the skin. Acetone is also a chemical intermediate in different reactions, including to synthesise methyl methacrylate and bisphenol A, important components in many plastics, resins and polymers.

Acetone has a range of industrial uses, and is commonly used as a solvent in many different processes. Acetone is also an important reagent in the manufacture of methyl methacrylate and bisphenol A.
The current method of producing acetone is via the cumene process. Other methods include the direct oxidation of propylene (the Wacker-Hoechst process), or the conversion of propylene to propanol which can then be oxidised to acetone.
