What are pure chemicals?

Pure chemicals are either elements or compounds that stand alone. For example, a mixture like a solution of table salt is not a pure chemical. However, unadulterated sodium chloride is a pure chemical. Metal alloys like brass are not pure chemicals but rather combinations of two or more metal elements that are not chemically bonded.

Pure chemicals are those available in unadulterated or non-diluted form and without any contamination. All pure chemicals are baryonic matter, whether in elemental or compound forms. The composition of these chemicals are known and their elements are in the periodic table.

Technically speaking, all baryonic matter we can see, touch, taste, smell, and manipulate are chemicals although they vary in purity. Baryonic matter refers to matter that is composed of atoms or at least protons and neutrons (plasma form). It is the normal matter that all of us are familiar with and composed of.

Baryonic matter can be in gas, liquid, solid or plasma form. The term baryonic refers to baryon particles that are governed by the laws of classical particle physics. They are distinguished from exotic and poorly understood matter like dark matter.

What are pure chemicals used for?

Pure chemicals have a wide range of industrial applications, particularly as precursors and ingredients for manufacturing other chemicals such as pharmaceutical products. Pure chemicals are also used in manufacturing many household products. For instance, caustic soda or sodium hydroxide is a major ingredient in many detergent and cleaning products.

One of the most common pure chemicals that has industrial applications is sulphuric acid. It is widely used as a precursor chemical for a wide range of products like fertilisers, explosives, and drugs. The top applications of sulphuric acid are in the following categories:

  • Fertilizers
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Gasoline
  • Automobile batteries
  • Paper bleaching
  • Steel manufacturing
