About Nitric Acid
This compound, sometimes referred to as the spirit of niter or aqua fortis, is a highly corrosive and hygroscopic acid. Typically, recently prepared solutions are colourless, but they tend to develop a slight yellow colouration over time due to the decomposition of nitric acid, generating nitrogen oxide.
Commercial applications vary widely, but typically common products can go up to 68%. Specialised solutions – commonly higher than 86% – are known as fuming nitric acid. In this case, it can be further divided into white or fuming nitric acid at concentrations higher than 95%.
This compound has found its way into many industrial applications, but most rely on this acid as a nitration agent, allowing the introduction of a nitro group in the desired chemical (usually an organic compound).
Some of these nitro compounds can be extremely sensitive and prone to explosion, but a select few are stable enough to be used in demolition and munitions. On the other end of the scale, some are completely stable and common ingredients in many inks and dyes.
