Caustic Soda as a Cleaning Agent

Caustic soda – sodium hydroxide (NaOH) – is commonly used as a cleaning agent, both in industrial settings as well as at home. In a large scale, it’s typically used diluted in warm water, to remove protein, fat, grease and oil deposits. These properties make it ideal in many different applications, from cleaning large tanks to delicate equipment. At home, it’s a popular product to unblock clogged pipes and drains or degrease stained ovens and cookers. In this case, most people opt for products presented as a thick liquid gel, which are easier to apply.

How Does it Work?

Caustic soda is such a powerful degreaser as it not only can convert fat into soluble products, which can be removed with water, but it also breaks down protein (such as in hair). These reactions are greatly enhanced by heat, when caustic soda is dissolved in hot water.

Safety

Caustic soda-based products, can be extremely corrosive and therefore should be handled with care at all times. This compound was used in the past as a paint stripper, but it was quickly replaced by safer and more efficient options, because it can seriously damage the wood. It is important to emphasise that this products should always be kept away from children and pets.
