Use of caustic soda in chemical pulping
Caustic soda – aka sodium hydroxide, NaOH – is an extremely versatile compound, used in many industrial and household applications. The manufacture of paper is one such example.
- Wood pulping: In particular, caustic soda is involved in the early stages of wood pulping, alongside sodium sulphide (Na2S). Both these ingredients are the key components in the kraft process: they form a solution known as white liquor solution, which is used to break the link between cellulose fibres (used for paper) from other wood components, such as lignin and hemicellulose. The idea is to degrade the undesired compounds into water-soluble chunks which can be washed away, but crucially without affecting the structure of the cellulose fibres.
- Bleaching brown pulp: Caustic soda is also involved in subsequent steps, particularly during bleaching of the pulp produced in the initial stages.
Why use caustic soda?
Caustic soda is used in this process due to its ability to maintain a strong alkaline environment (pH above 10) to promote oxidative extraction and delignification. This makes for an excellent quality white paper, strong and resilient to yellowing.
