Processes to Manufacture Sulphuric Acid

The two main ways to synthesise sulphuric acid – the contact and wet process – consist mainly of oxidation of sulphur to sulphur dioxide, which is then oxidised again to form sulphur trioxide and then finally converted to sulphuric acid either by absorption (contact process) or hydration (wet process). However, this acid can be produced via alternative methods, which are now out-of-date or not feasible:

Metabisulphite method

In this method, metabisulphite is mixed with a highly concentrated solution of hydrochloric acid (HCl), and the resulting gas is passed through nitric acid to release brown/red vapours.

Lab methods

Some methods are not feasible to use on an industrial scale, but can still be used in the lab to synthesise sulphuric acid. One of these methods is oxidation of sulphur in the air and then dissolving the gas produced (sulphur dioxide) in hydrogen peroxide:

SO2 H2O2 → H2SO4

Lead chamber process

In this old-fashioned method, used up to the mid-1900s, sulphur dioxide was mixed with nitrogen oxide in large lead chambers. After about 30 minutes, sulphur dioxide was oxidised to sulphuric acid. This is an exothermic reaction, and a major concern at the time was to find a way to quickly dissipate the heat.
