Chemical and Physical Properties of Sodium Hydroxide

In terms of appearance, sodium hydroxide can be sold in a pre-made solution, or in solid form, including colourless to white pellets, flakes or powder. In these forms, it is very hygroscopic and should be stored in a tightly closed container. Using these containers also prevents conversion to sodium carbonate by contact with carbon dioxide. It has both a high boiling point, at 1388 degree Celsius (2534 Fahrenheit) and a melting point, at 318 degree Celsius (605 Fahrenheit).  In term of solubility, it’s soluble in water, methanol and glycerol. When heated to high temperatures, it can decompose and release sodium oxide fumes, which can be toxic. The best well-known property for sodium hydroxide its alkaline behaviour, and even a 0.05% solution already exhibits a pH of 12, gradually increasing to 13 and 14 with a 0.5% and a 5% solutions, respectively. In terms of corrosivity, it is particularly corrosive to some metals (amphoteric), including aluminium and zinc. In these reactions, caustic soda forms complex anions such as AlO2-, ZnO2- and H2. In addition, sodium hydroxide reacts with mineral acids, forming the corresponding salts, and also reacts with weak acids, such as gases hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide.
