What is the Purpose of Denatured Alcohol?

Industrially synthesised ethanol is not supposed to be for human consumption. For this reason, toxic and foul-tasting additives are added to synthetic ethanol to discourage recreational drinking. In contrast, alcoholic beverages – with naturally produced ethanol from the bacterial fermentation of sugars – are heavily taxed. In order to avoid this taxation, ethanol for uses other than human consumption needs to be denatured. In other words, denatured alcohol is not used for a specific purpose for which pure ethanol would not be suitable, but if pure ethanol were cheaply available for fuel or solvents, some people may be tempted to drink it. This way, denatured ethanol can still be used as an inexpensive product for many industrial and household applications, without the risks of being used for human consumption. However, despite being toxic, there have been cases where people tried to drink denatured alcohol. One of the additives used is methanol, which can cause blindness and death, even if consumed in small quantities. For this reason, in addition to additives to make it toxic, some formulations now include additives such as denatonium, which give it an extremely bitter taste, or pyridine, which give it an unpleasant odour, or syrup of ipecac, an emetic substance.
