Passive membrane dosimeters can be used to detect the presence of hydrochloric acid fumes in air. These devices require no calibration and have no moving parts, and can be used to detect concentrations less than 24 ppm. This gas can also be detected by ion chromatography or eluent desorption.
In the lab, quantitative analysis of hydrochloric acid solutions in methanol and acetic acid can be analysed by titration using standard solutions of potassium, sodium or lithium acetate. If the mixture contains halides, analysis can be done by differential potentiometry, using silver nitrate as the reagent.
Types of impurities present
Hydrochloric acid typically contains mainly volatile impurities, including chlorinated hydrocarbons, which can be removed by stripping. This procedure can be done with an inert gas stream with low energy consumption, although in some cases it may be easier to heat the gas. Other impurities, such as inorganic compounds, can be removed by ion exchange.
