What Is Sodium Chloride Used For?
Most people know of at least one use for sodium chloride – as table salt – but this compound has also many industrial applications:- Chloralkali process: The foundation for producing chlorine gas and sodium hydroxide, two of the most widely used industrial chemicals
- Manufacture of sodium carbonate and calcium chloride: Essential in the production of glass, detergents, and de-icing agents
- Oil and gas extraction: Used in drilling fluids in the petrochemical industry to maintain pressure balance and reduce formation damage
- Textile manufacturing: Acts as a salting agent to remove impurities from dyes and fabrics
- Metallurgical processing: Plays a role in refining and treating metals like copper, steel, and vanadium
- Pulp and paper industry: Used to bleach and treat wood pulp, improving the brightness of paper products
- Leather preservation: Applied to animal hides to prevent microbial growth during storage
- Rubber and tyre manufacturing: Supports vulcanisation and material strengthening
- Water softening: Neutralises calcium and magnesium ions to prevent scaling and soap inefficiency
- De-icing and road maintenance: Used as road salt to lower the freezing point of water and reduce ice buildup (effective down to around -10°C)
- Food preservation and seasoning: Prevents bacterial growth and enhances flavour
- Fire safety: Active ingredient in Class D fire extinguishers for combating combustible metal fires
- Household cleaning: Traditionally used as a mild abrasive and disinfectant in general cleaning chemicals
Safe Handling and Storage
While sodium chloride is generally regarded as low-risk and non-toxic, best practices should still be followed when handling or storing chemical solutions.Key safety measures include:
- Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, away from moisture and incompatible substances
- Keep containers tightly sealed when not in use to prevent clumping and contamination
- Avoid generating dust and wear suitable PPE when handling large quantities
