Laboratory and Medical Uses for Ethanoic Acid
Although industrial applications as precursors in the synthesis of vinyl acetate and acetic anhydride are the most common, ethanoic acid is also indispensable in the lab:
- Solvent: Ethanoic acid is an excellent protic solvent and can be used in many laboratory applications, such as the purification process by recrystallization of organic compounds. In chemistry labs, it can also be used in carbocations reactions, such as Friedel-Crafts alkylation.
- Analytical Chemistry: Ethanoic acid is used in analytical chemistry to calculate the concentration of alkaline compounds, including organic amides. In this case, glacial ethanoic acid is a weaker base compared to water, and the amide can become the strong base. This way, the amide can be titrated using glacial ethanoic acid and a strong acid.
- Medical Uses: Ethanoic acid can be used to treat external ear infections, working as a gentle anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agent and reducing pain and inflammation. It’s usually combined with glycerin or alcohol to help dry the ear, as humidity promotes bacterial growth and prolongs the infection.
