Chemical and Physical Properties of Xylene
Also known as dimethylbenzene and xylol, xylene is an aromatic hydrocarbon in which benzene has had two substitutions with methyl groups. The three possible isomers have the molecular formula C8H10, which is sometimes written as C6H4(CH3)2, in which C6H4 refers to the benzene ring and (CH3)2 refers to the two methyl groups.
Xylene exists in three forms, commonly referred to as ortho-, meta- and para-, depending on where the two methyl substitutions occur. The isomers are characterised by counting the carbons in the benzene ring, starting with the first methyl group and counting until the next methyl group.
- Ortho-xylene is also called 1,2-dimethylbenzene or o-xylol
- Meta-xylene is also called 1,3-dimethylbenzene or m-xylol
- Para-xylene is also called 1,4-dimethylbenzene or p-xylol
How is Xylene Made?
Xylene is the most important petrochemical synthesised by catalytic reforming or coal carbonisation during the production of coke fuel. Typically, xylene is produced via methylation of benzene. Most commercial products contain a mixture of all three isomers, normally 40-65% meta-xylene and up to 20% of ortho- and para-xylene. Some specific applications require pure para-xylene, which can be obtained by transalkylation of xylene with trimethylbenzene, in a reaction catalysed by zeolites.
