What Are Xylene’s Common Uses?
- Raw material: Para-xylene is the main precursor in the synthesis of dimethyl terephthalate and terephthalic acid, which are used in the plastic and textile industry. Ortho-xylene is also used in the manufacture of phthalic anhydride, whereas meta-xylene is used to synthesise isophthalic acid. Of these three options, meta-xylene is the least used isomer, and is commonly converted to one of the other two versions. Other examples include a chlorination reaction to produce xylene dichloride (bis(chloromethyl)benzenes) and a mono-bromination reaction to synthesise xylyl bromide
- Solvent: Like benzene and toluene, xylene is a popular solvent. Typically, this mixture includes all three isomers and is used in the petroleum, leather, printing, and rubber industry
- Lab use: This compound is used in the lab together with dry ice as a coolant in reaction vessels. It’s also ideal to clean microscope objective lenses, especially to remove immersion oil. Also in microscopy, xylene is used to clean slides and remove paraffin from previous applications
Is Xylene Safe?
Exposure to this compound may cause headache and dizziness as well as eye and skin irritation. It may also cause kidney and liver failure, respiratory problems, coma and death if not treated promptly. It’s essential to always wear protective equipment when handling this chemical.

What is Xylene?
Also known as xylol and dimethylbenzene, xylene (C8H10)is a major petrochemical that is produced by coal carbonisation and catalytic reforming. It is generally from distilled oil. This produces a mix of benzene, toluene and xylene. It can also be described as an aromatic hydrocarbon.
Xylene is a greasy, colourless liquid and every year several million tonnes are produced. It exists in three different isomeric forms:
- Ortho-xylene
- Para-xylene
- Meta-xylene
Xylene is highly flammable and, therefore, should not be exposed to a naked flame. The product is toxic at high levels and is classed as an irritant. Care should be taken when handling this product.
What is Xylene Used For?
Xylene is useful in a number of applications. It has found uses in industry, medicine, laboratory functions such as:
- Industrial and laboratory solvents such as in printing to thin inks or varnishes.
- Cleaning agent such as in PC circuits and cleaning pipes in the petroleum industry.
- Creating baths in laboratory situations with dry ice to cool reaction vessels.
- In the textile and plastic industry, Xylene is a vital ingredient. In this form, para-xylene must be used.
- Can be used as a precursor to other compounds.
ReAgent sells Xylene in containers of 25 Litres up to drums of 200 Litres. Precautions must be taken at all times when handling chemicals.
