About Sodium Sulfite
Sodium sulphite, also spelt sodium sulfite, is a salt derived from sulphurous acid. With the chemical formula Na2SO3, it can be found in both a hydrate and anhydrous form. Sodium sulfite appears as white odourless crystals that have a saline taste and can dissolve slowly in water.
Sodium sulphite can be used in many applications, from a colour preservative in fruits and meats to a protectant of developer solutions in photography and a water treatment in swimming pools.
At room temperature, it is fairly stable but can decompose at temperatures above 600°C. When it does this, it releases toxic fumes like sodium and sulphur oxide. The anhydrous form is very stable against oxidation by air.
When handling this product, it is important to read the full MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet), which is available to download from our website. We also recommend that you wear the appropriate protective clothing and bear the following points in mind:
- Fire hazard: sodium sulphite is not combustible but it does release toxic and irritating gases in a fire
- Chemical hazard: It releases toxic fumes on decomposing
- Health hazard: this compound can cause coughing and a sore throat if inhaled, and it can be harmful if swallowed in large quantities. As sulphites are rapidly oxidised to sulphates – which are less harmful – this compound can be tolerated in small amounts, but high doses can cause violent colic and diarrhoea due to the accumulation of sulphurous acid. It can be fatal if not treated promptly. Also, repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause irritation
Sodium sulfite should always be stored in a well-ventilated area away from strong oxidants and acids.
