Uses of Sodium Hydroxide

As a strong base, this compound is used in many different industrial applications, of which one of the most important is the paper industry. Other uses include manufacture of soap, organic synthesis, pH regulation and additive in the drilling industry.

  • Paper manufacture: sodium hydroxide is commonly used in the initial steps to pulp wood or regenerated fibres. This compound is a key ingredient in the white liquor solution used to separate cellulose from lignin, and is used subsequently to bleach the resulting brown wood pulp. It is vital for all these processes to maintain a strong alkaline pH, typically above 10.5
  • Dissolving metals: Sodium hydroxide reacts with aluminium, releasing hydrogen gas. This reaction is very useful to convert polished surfaces to satin-like finishes, without further methods which may damage the surface. The same reaction is also used to refine bauxite ores (containing aluminium) which is converted to aluminium oxide
  • Esterification reactions: sodium hydroxide is traditionally used in the manufacture of soap. In contrast with potassium hydroxide, which produces soft and liquid soap, sodium hydroxide produces hard solid soap. The same process is also used to produce biodiesel, but in this case the reaction needs to be conducted with anhydrous sodium hydroxide, otherwise the result would be soap
  • Food preparation: Sodium hydroxide is often used to wash fruits and vegetables, as well as during cocoa processing and caramel production, among others
  • Cleaning agent: this compound can be used as an industrial cleaner, to clean large equipment and large storage tanks. It can remove protein and grease residues, so it’s commonly used to clean and unblock pipes in industrial and domestic settings
  • Household applications: Common household uses include in hair straighteners, cleaning agents and paint strippers
