How is Sodium Hydroxide Produced?

This chemical is most commonly synthesised via the electrolyticchloralkalii process, in which chlorine gas is also generated. After the reaction has taken place, solid sodium hydroxide is obtained by evaporation and sold typically in flakes or pearls. This hasn’t always been the method used, and previously sodium hydroxide was produced by mixing calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) and sodium carbonate (Na2CO3). This reaction is called causticizing, where sodium hydroxide is soluble in water but calcium carbonate is not.

Ca(OH)2 Na2CO3 → CaCO3 → 2NaOH

In an academic environment, sodium hydroxide is commonly produced via a reaction between water and pure sodium. This results in hydrogen and heat as by-products, often as a flame. As such, this is a good demonstration of how metals can be reactive with water, but it’s not commercially viable to produce sodium hydroxide in a large scale.
