What about sodium hydroxide’s safety?

Like any other strong alkali, sodium hydroxide can be an extremely dangerous chemical if not handled safely. In contact with skin, this compound can easily dissolve lipids and proteins and cause second and third degree burns and permanent damage. If in contact with the eyes, it can also cause redness and even blindness if not treated promptly. For this reason, all staff handling this chemical must wear safety protective equipment at all times, including gloves and goggles.

A second cause of concern when using this compound involve its highly exothermic reactions, capable of generating enough heat to potentially ignite flammable materials. In addition, in the presence of certain metals, such as zinc and aluminium, it can release toxic and flammable gases.

Is sodium hydroxide incompatible with other chemicals?

Sodium hydroxide is incompatible with a few chemicals, potentially releasing dangerous or toxic compounds. These chemicals include:

  • It can generate considerable amounts of heat when mixed with strong acids

  • Even when mixed with water, concentrated solutions of sodium hydroxide can generate heat and bring the temperature above boiling point

  • Sodium hydroxide can react with several metals, including zinc and aluminium, generating dangerous hydrogen gas

  • In some cases, continuously mixing is important to avoid an immediate and strong reaction when mixing does occur. Cases of such explosions have been reported with methanol, sodium carbonate and 4-methyl-2-nitrophenol.

  • Contact with 2,2,2-trichloroethanol can result in an explosion

  • Sodium hydroxide also forms explosive compounds in the presence of ammonia and silver nitrate, with the formation of silver nitride

  • Under some conditions, sodium hydroxide can react violently with allyl alcohol, acetaldeyde, nitropropane and others

  • A mixture of sodium hydroxide and the following compounds can also cause an increase in temperature and pressure: acetic acid, acrolein, ethylene, glyoxal, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, sulphuric acid, chlorohydrin

  • The process of drying tetrahydrofuran – which contains peroxides – using sodium hydroxide can be dangerous and cause explosions

  • Sodium hydroxide can react violently with phosphorus pentoxide
