How is sodium chloride manufactured?
This chemical can be simply extracted from natural salt deposits, by drilling wells into halite veins followed by injections of water to dissolve the salt. This solution is left long enough to become saturated with sodium chloride. This untreated brine solution is then pumped out of the well, and transported to a salt refinery for processing.
Commercial salt can also be produced via natural evaporation of seawater in large diked ponds known as condensers. The ponds are organised in such a way that water can slowly flow from one to the next, leaving behind a thick salt layer. After evaporation, the salt is transferred to a wash plant, where it’s processed and cleaned to remove impurities. This process of separating salt crystals is known as fractional crystallization.
Do we really need sodium chloride in our diet?
This chemical is needed in our diet to provide electrolyte supplementation. Both sodium and chloride are one of the major cations and anions in bodily fluids, respectively. They are both essential to control water distribution and electrolyte balance, and they’re also involved in regulating the acid-base balance in the body.
The primary route of excretion is urine, but it may also occur in sweat, especially after exercise. To minimise these losses, both the kidneys and the intestines are very efficient at re-absorbing sodium and chloride. Equally, although some sodium chloride is lost in sweat, this solution represents only a diluted version of body fluids. This means sweating represents a bigger loss of water than electrolytes, unless it’s prolonged and heavy sweating.
