Why acid analyser?

This ABB model is basically a calorimetric analyser to detect the presence of silica in steam generation and de-mineralisation plants. The equipment can be used in a single stream or in multiple streams independently.

From a chemical point of view, the process relies on the reaction between any silica present in the sample to analyse and molybdate products in an acidic environment. If silica is present, the result is a yellow molybdosilic acid complex. The low pH is essential to ensure that beta-molybdosilic acid is produced, eliminating interference from other forms of the complex. To improve the accuracy of the measurement, the yellow acid colour is reduced to a brighter and easier to detect blue which is subsequently measure by the calorimeter.

How does it work?

The basic process is simple:

  • First reagent (sulphuric acid) is added to the sample to lower pH to 1.4-1.8
  • Ammonium molybdate is then added to the acidic solution
  • The reaction between the reagent takes place, producing yellow molybdisilic acid
  • A solution of sulphuric acid and citric acid is added to lower even further the pH to around 1. This value is low enough to stop the deterioration of molybdate complexes and is also ideal for the subsequent reduction reaction.
  • In cases where the sample is expected to contain high levels of phosphate, the citric acid concentration is higher to prevent the formation of phosphate complexes which would contribute to inaccurate results
  • The reduction solution is then added, reducing the yellow to a blue complex
  • Finally, the colour intensity is measured and is proportional to the original silica content
