Engines and Antifreeze
The coolant system in automotive vehicles is probably the most common application for antifreeze products. This is because this system relies on water to keep the engine’s temperature down.
However, in cold climates, in particular, maintaining the water in the liquid state requires the addition of certain compounds to lower the freezing point and avoid the damaging effects that ice crystals would have on the engine. Corrosion inhibitors are also typically added to antifreeze to protect the engine.
Primary Agents in Antifreeze
The four main agents in antifreeze include methanol, glycerol, ethylene glycol and propylene glycol.
- Methanol: With the formula CH3OH, it’s the simplest alcohol and a highly flammable poisonous liquid. It’s not used in the engine’s coolant system but is typically used in windshield washer fluid and de-icers.
- Glycerol: This was the original antifreeze for car engines but has now been replaced with ethylene glycol which has a lower freezing point. Despite this limitation, as it is non-toxic, its use is being reassessed for certain applications where the temperature does not drop excessively below zero.
- Ethylene glycol: It’s known as the permanent antifreeze, as it can provide protection against cold and hot temperatures. It was once a very popular product, but recent concerns about its toxicity led to the development of safer alternatives.
- Propylene glycol: Labelled as the non-toxic antifreeze, is considerably less toxic but just as efficient as ethylene glycol. In addition to coolant systems in cars, it’s ideal where toxic ethylene glycol would be dangerous, such as in the food industry.
All our products, including antifreeze, come with A 100% quality guarantee and are usually shipped within 24 hours. A member of our customer service team is always happy to help before, during and after your purchase.
