Is Potassium Hydroxide Dangerous?

In one word, yes! On contact with skin, it causes redness and pain or even serious skin burns and blisters and if in contact with eyes it may cause blurred vision. If inhaled or ingested, staff may experience a cough and sore throat, as well and shortness of breath and abdominal pain. If not treated promptly, it may be fatal.

First Aid In Case Of Exposure

In case of contact with skin and eyes, wash with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes. If necessary remove contaminated skin. If ingested, do not induce vomiting but seek medical assistance immediately.

Handling and Storage of Potassium Hydroxide Flake

This compound should be stored in a dry and well-ventilated area, separated from strong acids and metals and away from water sources and sewers. Containers should be clearly labelled with chemical name, as well as toxic and corrosive signs.

It’s non-combustible, but in case of fire it may release toxic fumes. These by-products of decomposition may themselves ignite combustible materials, including wood, paper and clothing. In addition, contact with metals may generate flammable hydrogen gas, and potentially containers can explode when heated.

Personnel handling this chemical must be trained and wear protective clothing at all times to avoid accidental exposure. In additional to the usual gloves and goggles, if staff needs to be exposed to dust or mists, a breathing apparatus must be used.
