What is Oxalic Acid Dihydrate?
With the formula H2C2O4, oxalic acid is an organic compound that appears as colourless crystals. It is the simplest dicarboxylic acid and has a condensed formula of HOOCCOOH to reflect this.
Oxalic acid is most commonly found as the dihydrate (H2C2O4.2H2O). It is stronger than acetic acid and it naturally occurs in many food sources, like spinach, parsley and rhubarb leaves. However, chronic ingestion of oxalic acid can be dangerous.
What is Oxalic Acid Used For?
This acid has a range of uses across many industrial applications, from cleaning agents to bleach. In addition to this, oxalic acid operates as a reducing agent and its conjugate oxalate (C2O42-) is a popular chelating agent for metal cations.
Oxalic acid is also used:
- As a mordant
- In bleach
- In baking powder
- As an iron complexing agent in rust removal
- As an important reagent in metallurgy
- By artists to polish marble sculptures
- To remove black stains caused by water infiltration
How Safe Is It?
Oxalic acid can be toxic if ingested or inhaled and it can be very corrosive to the nose and throat. It can also cause burns if it comes into contact with skin or eyes. While it is not currently considered mutagenic or carcinogenic, there is some evidence that excessive exposure could cause malformations to the foetus.
Symptoms of exposure include:
- Burning sensation in the throat
- Coughing and wheezing
- Shortness of breath
- Inflammation of the larynx and bronchi
- Pulmonary oedema
- Kidney stones and joint pain (due to precipitation of solid calcium oxalate)
The same symptoms are also visible after the ingestion of ethylene glycol due to the fact that this compound is converted into oxalic acid in the body
