What is a Nital Solution?

A nital solution is a solution containing nitric acid and alcohol. It is typically used for the routine etching of metals. This product is particularly suitable to reveal the microstructure of carbon steels.

The type of alcohol used to prepare this solution can be ethanol, methanol or methylated spirits. The type of alcohol used may significantly influence how this solution can be used and what safety procedures will be needed.

Hazardous Information

It is important to note that when ethanol and nitric acid are mixed together, the solution is potentially explosive. This occurs when the concentration of nitric acid exceeds 10% (by weight). Therefore, a solution greater than 5% should not be stored in a closed container.

If methanol is used in the solution, the potential for explosion is very small as methanol is not prone to exploding. However, it is a very toxic substance and because of this, care should be taken when handling this chemical.

In general, nital solution is:

  • Flammable
  • Toxic if ingested, inhaled or if it comes into contact with the skin
  • Potentially able to have irreversible effects

Safety procedures

  • Avoid heat, flames and other sources of ignition
  • Avoid contact with alkali metals and strong oxidising compounds
  • Should be disposed of according to local authority requirements
  • Solutions, especially if above 5%, should not be stored in closed or cold conditions to reduce the risk of explosion
