Why is HCL Such a Strong Acid?
Everybody knows it: muriatic acid is a strong acid. But why? The reason lies in the type of bond between hydrogen and chloride.
This compound – also known as hydrogen chloride – is a diatomic molecule with one hydrogen atom (H) and one chlorine atom (Cl) bound via a single covalent bond.
As the chlorine has a stronger negative charge than the hydrogen, the bond becomes quite polar. This polarity makes it very soluble in water and other solvents.
For example, when mixed with water, HCL can dissociate and form hydronium cations H3O, after reaction with water) and chloride anions (Cl-) according to the reaction:
HCl H2O → H3O Cl−
Under normal conditions, HCl dissociates virtually completely in water, which means its acid dissociation (or ionisation constant) is large. In a simple manner, this is why muriatic acid is a strong acid.
How to Handle Muriatic Acid
Muriatic acid can be dangerous if not handled correctly and in a safe manner. This includes avoiding processes with alkaline compounds, as this may develop an exothermic reaction.
In addition, mixtures with cyanide should also be restricted to avoid the generation of hydrogen cyanide gas.
From a general point of view, any processes that may lead to a high risk of exposure should not be carried out without the necessary training and use of appropriate protective equipment.
