About Iron (III) Chloride

With the chemical formula FeCl3, iron (III) chloride is a compound where the iron is in the +3 oxidation state. Also known as ferric chloride, this substance is a popular ingredient in many industrial processes.

An interesting property of this compound is how its colour changes depending on the angle you look at the crystals: with reflected light, ferric chloride appears green, but changes to purple under transmitted light.

When added to an aqueous solution, this compound undergoes hydrolysis in an exothermic fashion. This forms a highly acidic and corrosive solution which is commonly used as a flocculant in sewage and water treatment. Ferric chloride can also be used in etching in the manufacture of printed circuit boards.

In its anhydrous form, which appears as a powder, iron (III) chloride is deliquescent and forms hydrated hydrogen chloride in moist air. This anhydrous form is also used as a catalyst in organic synthesis.

Safety Measures

This compound is considered highly toxic and corrosive so protective clothing like gloves and eye goggles must be worn at all times.

Both aqueous solutions and anhydrous forms can be dangerous. It can be harmful if ingested, inhaled or if it comes into direct contact with skin. In this case, it may cause abdominal pain, vomiting and may even cause you to collapse.

In the case of a fire, ferric chloride is not combustible but may release toxic fumes like chlorine and hydrogen chloride. We advise that you always consult the MSDS sheet which is available to download from our website.
