About iodine

With the chemical symbol I and atomic number 53, iodine is a popular element in many different applications, from food to industrial processes. The name derives from Greek, meaning violet due to the colour of iodine vapour. Its high atomic number, ease of binding to organic compounds and low toxicity make it ideal to use in many x-ray contrast materials in modern medicine. Several radioisotopes are also used in pharmaceutical and medical applications. This element is typically found as water-soluble iodine ion I-, mostly in oceans and other water sources. Its high atomic number make it a very rare element, but has developed an important role in biology. For example, it is one of the heaviest essential elements used by many different organisms (only tungsten used by some bacteria is heavier). The problem is that due to leaching by rainwater of an already scarce element in the soil, many land animals and even inland human populations are at high risk of developing iodine deficiencies. This is seen by most physicians and the leading preventable cause of learning difficulties. Its role in the metabolism is vital during the synthesis of thyroid hormones, which contain iodine. As a consequence, iodine radioisotopes have a tendency to concentrate in the thyroid gland. This includes radioisotope iodine-131, which has a high fission product yield. Luckily, however, this can be easily treated with non-radioactive potassium iodide.
