What is Hydrochloric Acid?

Dissolving hydrogen chloride (HCl) in water forms a colourless liquid with a characteristic pungent smell. This is known as a solution of hydrochloric acid. It is a highly corrosive mineral acid with a wide range of industrial applications, from pickling of steel to pH control. This compound was already known to alchemists by the name “spirits of salt” or “muriatic acid” (which means “related to brine or salt”). It was produced from sulphuric acid (H2SO4, vitriol) and sodium chloride (NaCl, common salt). The term muriatic acid is still used sometimes, but in 1814 French chemist Joseph Loius Gay-Lussac renamed it hydrochloric acid.

How is Hydrochloric Acid Used?

Over the centuries, it was used by many chemists in their work, but industrial production only started during the Industrial Revolution. Nowadays, this acid is used as a chemical reagent in large-scale production of many different products, from polyurethane to PVC plastic.Niche applications include the production of several food additives and leather processing, among others. To cover all these needs, over 20 million tonnes of hydrochloric acid are produced annually in the world.
