Safety concerns about formaldehyde
This compound is extremely toxic for both animals and humans – ingested, inhaled or via skin contact – and extreme exposure could be fatal. It’s currently considered toxic, allergenic and carcinogenic. For humans, exposure can occur by chemical decomposition of formaldehyde-based resins, inhaling formaldehyde vapour directly from solution (e.g. embalming solutions) or via the production of this compound after combustion of some organic substances.
Even at concentrations as low as 0.1ppm in air, formaldehyde can be an irritant to the eyes and throat, and may cause headaches, difficult breathing and aggravate other respiratory problems. For most people, problems are temporary, but exposure to higher levels can result in significant and permanent damage to the lungs. Some evidence also suggests a link with fertility and reproductive problems. For those allergic to formaldehyde, exposure may result in localised skin lesions or dermatitis
At home, people may be exposed to formaldehyde by exposure to products containing this compound, such as paints, varnishes and floor finishes; as well as inhaling cigarette smoking, where formaldehyde is also present. For your safety, MSDS sheets are available to download from our website.
