Chemical and physical properties of EDTA

EDTA – or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid – is classed as an aminopolycarboxylic acid. It can also be called diaminoethane-tetraacetic acid, edetic acid or versene, among others. It’s a colourless crystal, soluble in water, where it forms its conjugate base ethylenediaminetetraacetate. It’s commonly used as a ligand and chelating agent, due to a strong ability to bind to polyvalent metal ions, such as iron or calcium, effectively reducing its activity in solution.
