About cyclohexane

With the molecular formula C6H12 (sometimes written as (CH2)6), cyclohexane is an essential ingredient in the manufacture of nylon. In solution, cyclohexane is a colourless liquid smelling like detergent, highly soluble in ether, acetone and alcohol, but insoluble in water.

Methods of synthesis

Nowadays this compound has a well established method, via hydrogenation of benzene (a highly exothermic reaction), but this compound has an interesting history when it comes to its discovery. In 1867, Marcellin Berthelot was one of the first to synthesise cyclohexane in the lab by reducing benzene in the presence of hydroiodic acid at high temperature. However, he never realised what he had managed to synthesise as he incorrectly identified the result as hexane. Three years later, Adolf von Baeyer used the same process but identified the resultant compound as hexahydrobenzene and about 20 years later, researchers still could not agree as Vladimir Markovnikov called it hexanaphtene.

Curiously, the processes used subsequently by von Baeyer (condensation of pimelic acid) and by E Haworth and W Perkin (Wurtz reaction of 1,6-dibromohexane) had a slightly higher boiling point than the original methods, but it was confirmed in 1895 that hexahydrobenzene, hexanaphtene and cyclohexane were in fact all the same compound.
