What Units are Used to Measure Conductivity?



The International Unit to measure conductivity is the Siemens, typically expressed as Siemens per meter (S/m). Unless otherwise stated, values presented refer to measurements done at 25°C. Due to the low levels of conductivity, values encountered in many industrial processes are usually expressed as μS/cm. Values expressed in μS/cm are lower than those in μS/m by a factor of 100.

1 μS/cm = 100 μS/m

Before Siemens, electrical conductivity was measured in mho, which is the reciprocal for ohm. In this case, 1 mho/m = 1 S/m. This unit was used many decades before the Siemens being implemented as the International Unit and is now no longer used.

Conductivity is often expressed simply as Microsiemens – and omitting the distance-  and while this is not accurate, it can be assumed to be the same as the traditional μS/cm. A measurement of conductivity can be converted to express the total dissolved solids in solution.

The conversion factor depends on the chemical composition of the sample, but it typically varies between 0.54 and 0.96. Commonly, the conversion is done assuming the solid in solution is sodium chloride, and 1 μS/cm is equivalent to 0.64 mg of NaCl per kg of water.
