In practical terms, conductivity is a good indication of the presence or absence of ions in a particular solution. For this reason, measuring conductivity in different solutions is a common procedure in many industrial processes. One of the most important examples includes conductivity measurements done to monitor public water supplies, to ensure impurities are maintained within a certain accepted range. This is particularly relevant in areas such as hospitals or food industry sections which rely on water quality, such as brewing.

Despite its importance, this measurement is not ion-specific, as it only determines whether they’re present or not but not allows accurate identification. In some cases, it can be used to assess the amount of total dissolved solids (TDS), but only if the composition of the solution and its conductivity behaviour are known.

It’s important to note that some impurities cannot be detected by this process, including organic compounds which are not conductive. If needed, additional tests more appropriate to detect these substances should be conducted.

In some circumstances, further methods to increase the sensitivity of detecting certain ions are needed. For example, water may have to be continuously monitored for cation conductivity, which is the conductivity of the water after passing through a cation exchange resin. This is a very sensitive method to evaluate anion impurities in the presence of cations from the alkalising agent used for water treatment. In practical terms, this method relies on the high mobility of H when compared to other ions.
