What are Conductivity Standards Used for?

Conductivity standards have many different applications. Depending on the type of sensor used, these solutions can either be used for calibration (before any application) or verification (to validate results). One of the most popular applications is to validate results from samples with low conductivity standards like, for example, water samples.

How Long do Conductivity Standards Last?

Conductivity standards can be affected if in contact with air, due to the influence of carbon dioxide which alters its conductivity. This is particularly important for solutions with low conductivity, and as such these solutions have a limited shelf life. It’s recommended that any solution with a conductivity lower than 10 μS is only used under special procedures, such as under an inert gas or in a flow cell. In any case, this procedure is only advised for verification and not calibration.

What Procedures to Follow During Use?

One of the most aspects to take into consideration is temperature. Even slight changes in temperature can have a big impact on conductivity results. For this reason, containers typically include a table indicating conductivity values at the most common temperatures used for measurements and most sensors automatically use this table to correct final results. Nevertheless, it’s advised that both calibration and sample measurements are conducted at the same temperature.
