Uses of chloroform

With the formula CHCl3, chloroform is a dense solution with a characteristic sweet smell. This compound is used in many applications, in particular as a solvent or reagent in different process.

Using chloroform in an engine: a failed idea

There have been some attempts to replace steam with chloroform in an engine, but all failed. The idea was that using a liquid with a lower boiling point than water would make it more efficient, but in fact it turns out the opposite is true. No further work in this area is expected!

Free technical advice

In addition to chloroform for laboratory use, ReAgent can also supply for general and analytical use, to suit your needs. Simply contact us for a quote or free technical advice. All our products come with 100% quality guarantee and are usually shipped within 24 hours.

  • Solvent: Chloroform is the solvent of choice for many laboratory procedures, as it is unreactive but highly miscible with many other solutions. Pharmaceutical, as well as pesticides and dyes, are just a few examples of industries that use this compound in their manufacturing processes. In the lab, for example, chloroform is commonly used in a mixture with phenol and isoamyl alcohol in RNA and DNA extractions.
  • Reagent: Chloroform’s most important industrial use involves the production of chlorodifluoromethane, an important precursor to tetrafluoethylene, which is then converted to polytetrafluroethylene (a.k.a Teflon).Chloroform can also work as a source of the dichlorocarbene group (CCl2), which can subsequently be involved in different reactions, such as the Reimer-Tiemann reaction (conversion of phenols to aldehydes) or the Kharasch addition (free radical addition to alkenes).
