Safety When Handling Caustic Soda
Caustic soda, or sodium hydroxide (NaOH), is a highly corrosive metallic base. Contact with this compound can decompose proteins and lipids in the skin and eyes, via ester and amide hydrolysis and causing serious chemical burns. It’s important to note this compound is dangerous both as a powder, as well as dissolved in solution. As such, as a precautionary measure in the lab, it’s essential to always wear protective clothing, including rubber gloves and eye protection, while handling this chemical. The full Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is available to download from our website.
In particular, preparing a caustic soda solution (both in water or mixed with acids) needs to conducted with care, as it’s a exothermic reaction and the heat can cause a fire if kept close to flammable materials. Caustic soda should also be kept away from metals, such as aluminium, as the reaction between these two compounds can generate flammable hydrogen.
First Aid in Case of an Accident with Caustic Soda
The immediate action in case of accidental contact with caustic soda is to wash the affected area with copious amounts of water. This should be done for at least 15 minutes. Severe cases, or if involving the eyes, should be seen by a doctor.
