Caustic soda as an esterification agent to produce soap
One of the best known reactions involving caustic soda (sodium hydroxide, NaOH) is certainly in the process of making soap. In this case, the reaction is called saponification and it involves a base – caustic soda – and various types of fat (triglycerides). During the reaction, the triglyceride is attacked by caustic soda, breaking the ester bonds and releasing the fatty acid salt (of sodium), which is the soap, and glycerol.

Caustic soda as a transesterification agent to produce biodiesel
Caustic soda is also involved in the manufacture of biodiesel, namely as a catalyst in the transesterification of fats and alcohol. The main purpose of its addition is to speed up alcohol deprotonation to produce ethyl esters of fatty acids and glycerol. Curiously, for this reaction it’s essential to use anhydrous caustic soda, otherwise the end result would be soap via the same reaction as described above.
