Caustic soda and viscose

Viscose refers to a viscous solution of cellulose xanthate, which is obtained by treating wood (containing cellulose) in a similar manner as in the manufacture of paper. The treatment is done through a solution of caustic soda (NaOH) and carbon disulphide (CS2). By products of this reaction include sodium sulphide (Na2S), sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) and sodium thiocarbonate (CNa2S3).

This material is the starting point in many applications, including to spin synthetic fibre rayon (commonly used in clothing, upholstery and carpets), as well as food packaging favourite cellophane. The original product was developed in 1894 by chemist Charles Cross and described as “artificial silk”.

About cellophane

This material is composed of regenerated cellulose, and its low permeability make it an ideal product for food packaging. Following an initial treatment to produce viscose as described above, this is followed by a “bath” with sodium sulphate (Na2SO4) and sulphuric acid (H2SO4) to re-convert viscose into cellulose. This material undergoes a few final steps to eliminate sulphur, bleach the film and add glycerin.

About rayon

A similar method, but producing a thin filament of nearly pure cellulose instead of a film, is used in the manufacture of rayon. The name rayon was adopted in the early 20s, to differentiate from cellophane, but the common name viscose is still used today to refer to this type of fabric.
