Why Buy Butanol (C4H10O) Online from UK Chemical Suppliers, ReAgent Chemicals?
We supply butanol in 2.5L and 25L containers, with discounts available for bulk buyers (over 4 items). Our product has a purity level above 99.8% and less than 0.05% water and 0.005% acidity as acetic acid.
Butanol is a colourless liquid with a characteristic banana-like smell. It’s highly miscible in many organic solvents, including acetone, ethanol and ethyl ether; as well as water. The chemical formula can be written as C4H10O, or as C4H9OH to highlight the presence of an alcohol group (-OH).
Butanol comes in four different isomeric versions, including:
- a simple straight chain with the alcohol group at the end (butan-1-ol, which is a primary alcohol)
- a straight chain, but the alcohol group is connect to an internal carbon (called butan-2-ol)
- the third option involves a branched isomer with the alcohol group at the end (commonly referred to as isobutanol or 2-methyl-1-propanol)
- finally, the last isomer refers to a branched chain with the alcohol group linked to one of the internal carbons (called tert-butanol or 2-methyl-2-propanol)
Although technically with the same chemical formula, different isomers have slightly different chemical properties.
Methods of synthesis
The most common process starts with propylene (also called propene) which is converted to butyraldehyde, and subsequently reduced to butan-1-ol and butan-2-ol. The tertiary versions of butanol can be derived as a co-product in the synthesis of propylene oxide.
An alternative method involves bacterial fermentation, which was commonly used before synthetic methods were developed in the 50s. Clostridium acetobutylicum was the bacteria used industrially to produce butanol, although other bacteria can also perform these reactions.
