Once absorbed, barium chloride dissociates into chloride and barium ions. The body is able to excrete these ions, but barium can be toxic even just after a single oral administration. Barium is also irritant to the eye, but not to the skin. Repeated exposures or if left untreated can lead to permanent kidney damage.
Risk of Exposure
Barium chloride cannot be sold to private individuals directly, so the risk of accidents at home is negligible. In an industrial setting, risks can be minimised by operating under strict safety measures, where this chemical is only handled by trained professionals.
In the environment, barium chloride also dissociates into barium and chloride ions. While the chloride ions can remain in solution, barium ions are more reactive and can form barium sulphate precipitates in the presence of sulphate.
This insoluble form can deposit and remain in the sediment. However, in its original form, barium chloride has a low potential for bioaccumulation in the water, which means it does not pose any major chronic or acute threat to aquatic organisms.
