Also known as Ammonium rhodanid or Ammonium rhodanate, ammonium thiocyanate has the chemical formula CH4N2S. It forms colourless and odourless hygroscopic crystals, which are very soluble in water, ethanol and acetone but insoluble in chloroform. It’s prepared by mixing carbon disulphide (CS2) and aqueous ammonia (NH3), forming ammonium dithiocarbamate (NH2C(=S)SNH4), which decomposes to ammonium thiocyanate and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) after heating. An alternative method of synthesis involves boiling a solution of ammonium cyanide in the presence of sulphur.
Identification of ammonium thiocyanate in solution is done by precipitation as silver thuiocyanate in the presence of silver nitrate. Alternatively, by addition of ferric salt, a red colouration appears after production of ferric thiocyanante.
Although not flammable, it produces poisonous gases in fire, including ammonia, nitric oxides, sulphur oxides, and hydrogen cyanide. Inhalation of dust may cause irritation of eyes and throat, so protective clothing, including gloves and googles, must be worn. Full details about safety procedures can be found on the Material Safety Data Sheet available to download online.
