How to Determine the Presence of Ammonium Hydroxide
Detecting ammonium hydroxide is easy. The test mainly relies on Nessler solution, which provides a yellow colouration in solution if positive. For high concentrations of ammonium hydroxide, the test may result in the formation of a brown precipitate.
Nessler solution contains 0.09 mol/L potassium tetraiodomercurate (K2HgI4) added to 2.5 mol/L potassium hydroxide (KOH). This test is highly sensitive and can detect 0.3g NH4OH in 2L solution.

Ammonium Hydroxide Poisoning
Prolonged exposure to high concentrations of ammonium hydroxide can have serious health effects:
- These include breathing difficulties and coughing, as well as wheezing and throat swelling if inhaled.
- In case of ingestion, it may cause burns to the digestive tract, severe abdominal pain and vomiting. When it reaches the bloodstream, high levels of ammonium hydroxide can dramatically alter the blood’s pH, resulting in damage to most internal organs.
- Ammonium hydroxide can also cause irritation and burns, after contact with skin.
When handling it is vital to follow adequate safety measures, including gloves, goggles and suitable protective clothing. For further information, the MSDS can be downloaded from our website.
